madras maadhiri varuma - the cleanest metro

Hey..

I watched the movie MINNALE umpteen times. I own the DVD as well. Yes, I do like Reema Sen and I used to be a Madhavan fan. But beyond all this, there is another reason why I liked that movie. There is one dialogue which occurs twice - once by Maddy and other by Reema "ennadhaan irundhaalum Madras maadhiri varuma"( Whatever you say, can any other place compare to Chennai?). And I loved it !!

I wasnt born in Chennai. I spent close to 6 years there - some of the best years of my life. I have a great affinity towards the city and no wonder today I was punching my fists in the air when I read the following news item from IBN LIVE - Chennai has been rated as the cleanest metro in India . It is NOT Bangalore, NOT Delhi and NOT Mumbai, but our very own ever lovely Chennai !!

And so Chennaiites who are happy and those who smirk at this article with skepticism, let us keep the city clean and green.

Madras, Namma Madras..

the gang which cried 'wolf' !

Hey..

This is not just another little story off a Tinkle comic. This is a messy tale that has broken the omerta - bringing to light the internal dark tales. With the Bush government not shy of embarrassment of any sorts, adding to the list is the episode from the World Bank, headquartered at Washington, DC. Paul Wolfowitz, the architect of Iraq war, the controversial President of the World Bank finally decided to step down after getting stuck in a favoritism issue.

Wolfie was never anybody's favorite in 1818 H Street. His background and the lack of it - both contributed to the initial hatred. He architected Iraq war, he had no experience in Banking or development any way.. But the biggest reason of hatred was that, he did not involve in discussions with the Staff Association of the World Bank in any way. The very outspoken Alison Cave (Chair of the Staff Association of World Bank), blasted Wolfie right from since he joined.

Now let us just step back and take a look at the big picture. The World Bank is a development institution encompassing the World Bank, IFC and IDA. Headquartered in Washington, DC, just a stone's throw away from the White house, it employs over 12000 people and thousands of consultants. While the goal of the institution is "to drive out poverty from the World", it is ironical that less than 40% of the World Bank staff actually reside in the field. Most of them work out of offices based in the US capital. In addition they earn enviable salaries with NO tax(except in case of US citizens, in which case they are compensated accordingly). Furthermore they receive huge perks which range from home-travel, housing loan, first class air travel, huge retirement benefits etc etc., It is no wonder that the operating budget of the World Bank is over $1 billion!..

Even after all the perks, there is huge inefficiency in the organization - corruption, kickbacks and the like. Jim Wolfensohn, the iBanker who ran the World Bank for past 10 years tried a lot to cleanup the internal mess. He was partly successful. When Paul Wolfowitz stepped in, it was scary for the cozy comfortable and complacent staff who viewed it as a threat - he was a man who demanded action, who was a no-nonsense guy and who wanted answers. This is very evident from what he has achieved in the little time he has been leading the Bank. So from day 1, it is no surprise that the Staff association of the Bank has been voicing opinions against him.

Yes. Wolfie did mistakes. He showed favoritism to his girlfriend. However, he lead the organization well. He tried tightening the screws of the system. It is very unfortunate that he decided to make a wrong judgmental call. But the gang that has clamored him to go is not right in any way either. (Even Alison Cave receives a huge salary without coming to office !!) They have just manipulated Wolfie's weakness into getting him out - and what can one say - Wolfie just gave them a cake. An ethics talk about this gang is most ironical.

However this incident has brought to light the way the Bank has been operating. They are forced to answer questions like "Do World Bank Staff pay taxes" etc., in their homepage (www.worldbank.org) .. In view of what has happened, the World Bank has to now become more transparent in their functioning - not act like some huge black box conglomerate. The World Bank has a moral social obligation.

The World Bank president seat is not a prize for the US government well-performers. Nor should the President be a puppet in the hands of select staff who want to go about doing the same things as usual without results. The World Bank needs a strong leader - someone who can question, someone who can lead and more importantly someone who can remove the complacency out of the staff and lessen the operational overhead. Someone who will really focus and make his/her team focus really on eliminating poverty from the World.

the royal wedding

Hey...

The whole Indian media has gone nuts over it. This has received LIVE telecasts in multiple nationally respected television channels. The event has masked the World Cup cricket, VA Tech news, the campus shooting of AP, Kalam's second term discussion, the UP elections and what not.. And if the entire media has written all over it, why shouldn't this so called active blogger do it ?

The question can bounce back. If everyone has written about it, then what have I got to say that is new? Am not willing to answer that one and so I am proceeding to record my views here - after all none of the actual media ever got to see the event anyway - so we are all in the same boat.

Amitabh Bachan is in India of what Queen Elizabeth is in UK or Arnold Schwarzneggar in the US. His status is iconic. And any event inside his family, like his cow giving birth to a calf, would be treated with nothing less than a national holiday. And if the Prince of the King is getting married, what else could be of national importance? And it gets only better - if the Prince is getting married to the most coveted princess, whom the world titled as the most beautiful person, this is a celestial event; a fairy tale..

Lets not worry that these people are mere mortals and just movie celebrities. Lets not dwell upon the fact that each of them had several lovers before this and what is happening now is more of a business arrangement than a actual marriage. Lets not break our heads in figuring out that we all have our own lives and important things keep happening around us - lets all gather in front of Pratheeksha for days together waiting to see the dulhe Raja; or gather in front of TV sets to watch replays of Kajol, Anil Ambani and Sachin Tendulkar walk inside the wedding arena.
And yeah, why spare the Gods too!! Lets block all queues of Tirupati, the roads, airport runways for the celebrity couple to have a private meeting with the Lord himself. The mere mortals can wait another few hours - after all, do they donate Rs 5.1 million in one year?

We are a bunch of intelligent lot. And somehow when the majority of us out hours of our lifetime to watch, track, discuss and blog(!!) about such a wedding of 2 movie stars; or run judicial cases & issue arrest warrants to a foreign actor who kissed a bollywood heroine in the cheeks - we don't seem that intelligent. But we are people who have traditionally placed the shadow stars above everything else and painted them with larger than life status. We make them real life Gods out of their movie screen characters and worship them - literally..

Oh come on, lets forget the sarcastic blogger.. Can we google to see if we get more cellphone cam pictures of the wedding? Maybe the Tahiti photos would be more exciting !! ;) Can we sponsor the "neighbour" a trip ?

Ciao..

the journey resumes

Hey..

I am finally back at school again !!

Traveling by the Charminar Express to the Cyber city, we (I and my better half) decided to be in the hot-spot one day early. As we negotiated with the porters and the cabs, I realized that I had to put use some of the management skills even before I had a chance to acquire them. Finally dumped the huge bags in the trunk of a cab (Don't worry if it doesn't fit in. I will tie the car with a rope.. it is much stronger than the lock of the trunk - the reassurance from a friendly cab driver) and took the 45 minute journey to the Indian School of Business (ISB) campus at Gachibowli - crisscrossing the maze of what is called the city of Hyderabad.

The campus itself is awesome. Took the Executive Housing for the first day and had a good walk all evening. One cannot believe that there exists such a beautiful, serene, calm and romantic place in a crazy city. On the April 14th, the D-Day, the actual registration commenced. It is being followed by a week long orientation program and the regular classes start on April 23.

Putting the real faces from those who established friendships via Orkut or the forums was interesting. The last 72 hours have gone in either saying or hearing "Hi.. We haven't met. I am xxxxxx from yyyyyy.. and You ?" . Parties have started already and we managed to have 2 in 2 days... I guess the nearby wine shop really doesn't need any marketing help.

Somewhere in the middle of this beautiful campus and non-stop partying we expect to have a roasting schedule to study. I will keep this blog updated (but apparently that is what everybody says in the first term of the school.. then they forget they have a blog and then they forget they have a life !)..

and so the school journey resumes again!!

goodbye america

Hey...

I came to the promised land with loads of dreams. I enjoyed almost every minute of being and working here. I have roamed in more than 47 states here. My 'been there - seen that' list can run into pages and pages. Took the haj to Orlando, Niagara, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and every other spot that is so sacrosanct for tourists here. Somewhere in this journey I did decent work, got my parents out of inertia to visit here, got married .... I never gave a serious thought of ending this cool ride inside the US of A.

But finally we all have to chase our passions. And so I am going back. Back to India, back to school. And am excited to leave.

Looking back, though the incidents of visiting police station or racial insults and similar ones have left deep scars in my heart, they are masked by the wonderful time I have had all these years in this nation.

I don't know if and when I will be back here. But one thing is for sure. I have had loads of learning that I steal away and will definitely capitalize on this.

Goodbye America. Will miss you, most certainly.

cupid's victim...

Hey..

It has been a year since I sat down at Borders bookstore for 4 hours on a Saturday afternoon. It has been a year since I had a movie marathon of Francis Ford Coppola. It has been a year since I spent 20, 18 or at least 12 continuous hours at work. It has been a year since I frequented libraries; and been to a party just for the free food; and touched my bike; and called my West Coast friends after 9:00 PM their time, every other day; and had a Dunkin Donut breakfast, Chipotle lunch, Pizza Hut dinner with a popcorn/coke late night snack - all on the same day...

Of course, yeah, it has been a year since I got married.

Do I miss any of the above ? The answer is NO. I really don't. People did scare me that I will not be able to do many of the cherished things after marriage, like the ones above. Maybe it is true that I haven't done any of those like how it was said, but there is nothing that actually prevented me from doing one of 'em. The reality is that I have voluntarily given up the pleasures of the bachelorhood and sunk myself into my new love life. I guess I matured into a grown up man !

For the past one year I have been taken care of like a King. For the past one year I have enjoyed talking lot of things, the sweet nothings to the same person over and over again. For the past one year someone else in the world knows me much better than I know myself and much more than even what my mom knew of me. For the past one year I have confided everything to one person without any fear of being judged. For the past one year I have gone to the likes of Niagara never once feeling envious at the hordes of (desi) couples who hold hands and embed themselves in kisses notwithstanding what is happening around; For the past one year I have gotten hit when I appeared ogling at Anu Hassan; and fought with someone so much only to make up the next minute; and have eaten excellent food - even at lunch; and do anything & everything, just to see a smile curl up...

Of course, for the past one year, I have been in love and I am being loved.

I am no poet but I believe Elvis Costello did justice when he wrote this.. and I dedicate this to my first year of paradise..

She
May be the face I can't forget
The trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure or the price I have to pay
She
May be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day
She
May be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a heaven or a hell
She may be the mirror of my dreams
The smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell
She
Who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one's allowed to see them when they cry
She
May be the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past
That I'll remember till the day I die
She
May be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I'm alive
The one I'll care for through the rough in ready years
Me
I'll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I've got to be
The meaning of my life is

She
She, oh she

Thanks for all the wishes and prayers.

iCon..??

Hey..

I just completed reading a couple of (unauthorized) biographies of Steve Jobs, the king-of-Mac. While much has been said and read about his evil nemesis Bill Gates, it was a very different idea I got about Steve Jobs after going through these biographies. Of course, they could be biased, sponsored by Bill Gates himself to tarnish the image of the king; It still revealed a darker side of his persona and for some reason I have now very little attraction to Mac, iPod and the like.

After touring India and getting himself buried in Zen principles, Steve Jobs went on to break
the things which he 'posed' to believe. Fathering a child with Chris-Ann, Steve Jobs refused to accept the fact that he was the father even after a DNA test proved him to be the one; even after the state court ordered him to take custody or provide alimony. It took him more than 10 years before which that daughter (Lisa) was allowed to use his last name.

He broke off trust and relation even with his closest friends to prove his authority - be it Dan Kookte or Steve Wozniak or Mike Marukkula. By sheer marketing brilliance and displaying overpowering passion he has demanded authority everywhere - sometimes it has backfired and sometimes it has worked so well.

Not to blindly discredit Steve Jobs, it only goes to prove that the darker side exists everywhere - even with the geeky technologist believing in Zen - and the icon Steve Jobs is no exception to the rule.

At the end of it, I somehow get a feeling Bill Gates is a shrewd businessman but not necessarily a bad human and definitely much better than the geeky, young, rash, abrasive Steve Jobs. And I have stopped becoming crazy for Mac, iPod and the like..

f1 2007

Hey..

The Formula 1 2007 season is almost all set. Most of the teams have announced their driver lineups. There have been very significant changes to the game overall, even before Concorde agreement revision next year. In addition, the teams have also undergone rapid transformations with changes from drivers, mechanics, engineers, designers etc etc.,

For one, the Ferrari is all new, save alone Massa. Kimi Raikkonen is poised to lead the tracks in what can be called the best car of the world. This combo is sure to be the favorite of all crowds. Felipe Massa has declared that he will not play a second fiddle to anyone - though much of this will be the team decision.

Ron Denis is very happy to have the two time champion Fernando Alonso with him in McLaren. This team had a very disappointing season in 2006 and is badly looking forward for a good performance this year. Montoya's abrupt exit, Kimi's drunken antics, retired cars and lack of wins have left the team with a low morale. Ron Denis has banned any alcohol consumption in 2007 for his team (except the winning champagne).

Renault will be fighting for a hatrick in both constructor and driver championships. Renault did have to compete fiercely both the years and a major backbone of the team was Giancarlo Fisichella. He may not belong to the best breed of drivers, but he has one of the most stable and enviable cars in the ciruit, not to mention, a mastermind team management.

If there is one additional person I will put my money on, it is Jensen Button. Perhaps the most overrated and overpaid driver of Formula 1, Button clinched his first victory in 2006. I strongly believe he is the only other threat to the other four mentioned above. (Of course, I have my strong opinions against Toyota and so my observations are biased).

F1 2007 will be a different sport, with changes to the tyre provider. Bridgestone will be the sole supplier of tyres and hence the tyre feud (which has been huge since Indy 2005) will be gone missing. Also freeze of engines is another to look up to. Maybe Alonso is already sweating in his pants given the dismal Mclaren last year.

But most important of all, which masks every other change will be the absence of the legend Michael Schumacher, king of the sport. I have never been his fan but somehow his absence leaves such a big void to this game. He brought life to this sport in addition to several things. He will be sorely missed.

Go F1 2007. vrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooommmm.......................

nostalgic notions

Hey..

For some reason all of us always love to go back to "good old days". For some it is the school, for some it is their college, for some it is the bachelorhood, love life, the days when the daughter was still a kid etc etc., The drive stems from our preference for familiarity and our comfort factor in familiar grounds. We can sit and talk about Who moved my cheese and discuss Alvin Toffler for hours - talk about the need for change, insist that the only constant thing in the world is change; but the unchangeable truth is that all of us like familiar grounds. Given a chance, we would like to rewind our life for a few hours or days or years and live the golden life again.

Maybe that is why I am so excited to go back to school again !

I have been accepted for the Post Graduate Program at Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. I am so excited to go back to full time school. I am so thankful to everyone who has made this possible for me, giving me a chance to re-live the college life to some extent.

It is of course true that it will never be the same again. It can never compare to my undergraduate college life. Maybe I will be in a hurry to come back to the world of paychecks and make money and spend it without guilt. But it doesn't matter. For just the sheer excitement of going back to school has pumped enough energy into my blood.

Yes, change is good. And when coupled with little bit of nostalgia, it tastes wonderful !.

Never Say Goodbye

Hi..

Last night I watched this movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, and it made me do three things which I haven't done for a very long while. First, I watched this movie at a 11:45 PM show. Second, I stood in the queue for over an hour to enter the cinema hall. And Third, I posted a blog.

To set expectations straight, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (Lets refer it as KANK in short, for obvious reasons) is not a great movie. It didn't have a very strong storyline. It hovered around the theme love, between a husband and a wife of a couple of couples. And by the way, before I forget, love between someone's husband and someone else's wife. Off late, Indian movie scriptwriters have been listening to viewers complaints that our movies are of the typical formula. A sizeable percentage of Indian movies these days have been themed around infidelity, adultery, unfaithfulness etc., Whatever happened to the good old days of hero meets heroine-falls in love-villain rapes hero's sister-stunts and family emotion-hero's mother or second heroine dies-hero&herione marry kind of movies ?Agreed that they were monotonous, boring and stereotypes, but they were still watchable with families without having to squirm in the seats.

A bold topic as this, thankfully, was set on the banks of Brooklyn river. Two American Desi families tread along rough marital lives. And by matter of chance their lives seem to cross each other, until one of the spouses of either families decides not to leave this crossing purely to chance. They decide that the love in their marriages has become irrecoverable and finally find love in the arms of each other. They take this adulterous love forward. When they decide to give their marriages one more shot by forgoing this feeling it may just be too late.

Let me be honest. I went to KANK to watch the bubbly ShahRukh and the gorgeous Rani. Of course, Rani was flawless and didn't disappoint me. Her smile, charm, attire and tone were all worth the dough I shelled for this. ShahRukh however was on a different role. It was not the charm-boy Rahul or Raj on the screen who is always energetic, cheerful, Iam Cool kinda guy dancing his way through. Instead one could see a serious and snobbish Shah Rukh, getting angry at every frame on the screen.. Surprisingly wonderful was the performance of Abhishek Bachchan, who is these days away from the shadow of his dad. Preity hooked on to a busy-working mom role. Amitabh as usual is there just to increase the star-cast value and pretty much nothing more. In Hindi movies, one can release a movie without story, dialogue, hero or heroines, but definitely not without Amitabh.

Anyways, is Karan Johar justified in his bold experiment ? Perhaps yes.. for these subjects, no matter what anyone says, are still a taboo to Indian culture. And perhaps that's why Karan took the story to a American Desi backdrop - for with Desis- it is easy to question their culture, value, traditions, lifestyle - and show them in whatever bad light inside India.. Desis have found themselves searching for identities, trying to lead a traditional Indian life in the midst of a foreign land, and before they find one, the Indian directors can milk all their taboo stories with a desi backdrop. I strongly believe that Karan went too far when he showed the adulterous couple booking a hotel room and sleeping with each other. And by the way Karan, since when did a SEPTA train start going to Toronto, Canada ?

So, my friends, one more movie on adultery with all the big stars is out there. And Indians can now boast of catching up with the western culture - atleast in fooling around with another's spouse.

the revolutionaries of rang de basanti

Hey..

Looks like I had stopped my yapping for quite some time now. But a movie that I watched yesterday evening compelled me to jot something up. The movie was Rang De Basanti, another Aamir Khan-Jai Hind type of movie following the Lagaan and Mangal Panday - the Rising note.

What can you say when you see twenty somethings from college dorms sporting jeans, sneakers and gulping beer all day ? The last thing that can be your guess is the fact that they are revolutionaries trying to make a change in the society. They do not have trimmed pointed mustaches, do not passionately pen poems praising the motherland, do not secretly meet and bomb trains or break bridges, do not discuss Lenin and Che - nothing that the revolutionaries of our history books have been painted with. All these spoilt kids do is to smoke uncontrollably, drink erratically, blame the society for their status and make unpleasant jokes at wrong moments..

Steps in a English girl who awakens their inner spirit unknowingly by forcing them to act as the Bhagat Singh and friends in her documentary. Rapid turn of events kindles their innermost emotions and these youngsters don the avatar of the Indian revolutionaries of the early 20th century to ignite the fire in the hearts and minds of millions of youth who are in slumber. Sounds a nice story. Infact the blending of the original Bhagat Singh saga with that of the current is done well. Except for Aamir Khan, the rest all fit well in their role and looked like University students too. Aamir was a good Azad character, but the Univ 5 year passout was pushing it too hard. The movie itself was done decent, taking a dig at politicians (like Fernandez), Sangh Parivars and the like. The climax was a tough digest, but the movie in its entirety was indeed enjoyable.

But the bigger question is what if this is true ? Is this the kind of awakening that we will need ? Do the youth of today get pushed so much that they have to resort to violence and dramatics if they have to be heard ? While some of the scenes of Rang De Basanti may have been overcooked, it is not far fetched from reality. We do see our Armed forces laying lives because of corrupted ministries. We do see government & officials walk out scot free after long trials which have little hope of ending in one lifetime anyway. We do see people who open their mouth being locked up and permanently silenced. And if this is a trend that continues, don't the youth of the country, who are willing to make a change, get pushed to the extreme where they are forced to resort to violence and theatrics ?

While there are still many questions lingering about the credibility of the movie, the message that the movie passes is indeed powerful. One doesn't need to stand on the side and crib about what is going wrong. One doesn't need to resign to fate and claim that nothing can be done. One doesn't need to run away from reality submitting to faithlessness. Make the change, be a part of the movement; it just takes people with passion to drive a positive change.

Bhagat Singh and his friends created history by displaying passion and love for the nation and displaying the willingness to save the nation. Age was not a factor. Fear was not a factor. Their unbridled patriotism and faith in the future pushed them to stand up against a mighty oppressing empire. If the current governments pretty much operate the same way, it may not be too late for us to see more & more Bhagat Singhs emerge from the nook and corners of the society to stand up against evil. But caution. There is only a thin line of difference between revolutionaries who fight for justice and terrorists. If the potentials of the potential Bhagat Singhs were to be tapped by wrong hands, we will not have a nation saving battle, but a bloodbath by fanatics.

Inquilab Zindabad.

american desi and artificial interests

Hey..

A few days back one of my very reasonable friends alleged that the interest any of the desi's in the US may exhibit in core American games/sports, like American football for instance, is very artificial..

This argument started when we were following a thrilling game between Washington RedSkins, the DC home team with the Philadelphia Eagles on New Year day. The game was important because a win on this game would give the RedSkins an entry into the playoffs. After a wonderful game (where RedSkins won 31-20), I was discussing the game with Eswar, when this very reasonable friend stepped in and asserted - the whole thing sounded very artificial and superficial to him.

Coming to think about this, I really do not blame him for that conclusion. I find many of what we desis do very artificial indeed:
  • I find it artificial when we desis try to mimic the (horribly irritating) rap musicians - wearing a monkey cap, partially holding the hands upto the chest and yelling Yo wazzup! in a basal high pitch;..
  • I find it artificial when we desis pickup an 'American' slang, adulterating the decent English that we can speak as pathetic as one could, thereby making it unintelligible for anybody to understand; ...
  • I find it artificial when we desis listen to the traffic, check the weather and print out maps before we drive to the superstore on the next block; ...

So if all the above is considered artificial, then what is wrong in my friend's observation that cheering up for an all American team in an all American game to be artificial ?

That I cannot agree. I, for one, love sports/games blindly. Be it whatever. I can sit & watch any sport of any sort without getting bored for hours - Tennis, Soccer, Golf, Swimming, Cycling, Formula One, Pool etc etc., - I just love sports. And I know that there are quite a few of my friends - this one for sure, who do the same. We share a passion for sports. Sports is universal, just like how music is - borderless, boundaryless.

Just because Iam from India doesnt mean that I have to sit & cheer only cricket - the game in our DNA, or hockey - the national sport or kabaddi - where we easily win medals .. I can equally appreciate Tennis and maybe cheer more when Leander or Sania get to the matchpoint, appreciate Racing and maybe cheer more when Narain completes a race, appreciate Golf and maybe cheer more when Vijay Singh hits a birdie, appreciate Chess and maybe cheer more when Anand does a check mate. Being in India has never hampered us to follow any of these 'imported' sports.. And coming to America has just widened our scope to look & follow more sports - basketball, baseball, football and the like.

I agree that (I used to think) American football is nothing but a game of rough bullies weighing 250+ lbs each falling over each other just like that - a bigger version of relatively leaner Sumo players or WWF. I used to laugh at the irony that this game is called Football, when they rarely use the foot and the ball isnt even round. But I have come to admire, follow through and enjoy the sport over time - and just like how some need exams to increase seriousness in a reading, just like how some need a speedometer to pump adrenaline while driving crazily on a freeway, I just need to cheer & support a team/player to take a more active interest in sports (just a variation of Maslow's theory X, I guess;)). And so I support a team, conveniently the RedSkins - home team from Washington, DC where I live.

When one does something not just for conversation starters or to look cool, when one watches a game waking up at crazy times like 3:20 AM because a favorite team plays, when one travels a few thousand miles staying in rubbish motels just to follow a 90 minute race - the interest sure may be an acquired one, but definitely is not artificial.

Ciao..

PS: On a totally different note, DC folks - do visit Misha's coffee at Old Town. They serve excellent coffee and the place is cozy. You can catch up on reading, play scrabbles/chess, discuss politics, blog(the internet is weak & unusable though) or the best - sip coffee and engage in advanced ornithology !

of sports and women

Hey..

So what is with sports and women ? I mean, why cant they relate to sports in general and every sport in particular ? Not only dont they try to understand, but they also have a certain distaste, aversion, pet peeve, hate, dislike and every other possible such adjective towards games and sports. Before I continue, let me clarify that the women in this post actually refers more to Indian/Desi women, though I am sure what I have stated is more or less applicable to the female gender in the Universe.

Are games that hard to understand ? I mean, no one expect the woman to play but to just sit through, watch and maybe cheer. The lady of this generation studies rocket sciences, does complicated arithmetic calculations, cuts code in 10th generation programming languages, cooks multi-cuisine with equal ease, drives rashly on the road making even Montoya bow his head in shame, manages work and home intelligently - so it is very surprising when she shakes her head in despair and announces that she cannot follow games & sports !!!

How complex can cricket be ? Every Indian has the sport in his blood, isn't it not ? I have always thought the almighty creator injects cricket DNA to Indians, basketball to Americans, Soccer to the Brazilians and the like ? But maybe he does the injecting to the male species. Coming back to cricket, how complex is the sport, really ? Every street corner in India witnesses kids playing cricket. Anything round is considered a ball; a strong stick turns into a bat; and the wall or a lamp-post or a fence is the wicket - and the sport begins and can run into hours. There are even crazy gangs that can play a virtual-cricket using page numbered textbooks. Breaking glass panes, diverting the poor motorists off the road, hitting the neighbor's scooter, pulling off the last page of The Hindu - all this is a package of growing up with cricket. And women cant understand our passion for the game ?

The other side of this is also dangerous. When the womenfolk do watch cricket or any other sport, they watch it for all the wrong reasons. "Sourav is too hot ya", or, "Oh God. Agassi, aww, wow, huh, (sigh) " - censorable dialogues follow through and they admire the sportsman, sometimes not even knowing what sport he plays. When we are around such women, I wont be surprised if we feel gay watching male sports !

The Indian televisions tried to market the cricketing sport to the ladies by making the hot Mandira Bedi as a program anchor. Well, the audience & popularity sure increased, with a double whammy as we watch Sachin hit a sixer followed by a blondie-kinda yapping from Mandira. Now the cheerleader concept needs to come to cricketing sport and it is like a dream ! Anyways, the Bharatiya Naris who watched Mandira worried about her dresses, the earrings, the short sleeves etc and accused the passionate sporting fans of watching her and not the game....

Of course, women tennis, ladies soccer, girls rowing - are all watched more by men. And again, this is because of the taste for the sport than anything else, though the maledom is again looked at with suspicion. Same is when we hook up the TV to follow NBA or NFL - for Godssake, they dont show the cheerleaders for more than 5 minutes of the 3 hour game ! The women have reason to hate every sport - Cricket is a waste of time; NBA is a late evening crime; Football is rough; Sumo is nauseating; WWF is ridiculous; Women tennis is a F-TV show; Racing causes ear-ache; Golf is boring .... the list is endless!!!!!

So my friends, there is something with the women and sports. Something repelling. Something dead against. Maybe women think of sports as their mother-in-laws. You can love them both, but you cant make them love each other. And if you did attempt that, within minutes you would realize that your love for either of them will drop down heavily. And you wish you ran 2 separate lives that don't run into each other.

sweet nothings

Hey..

It is holiday season, it is winter, it is the time for a new year to be born - it is time for a little romance.

It never ceases to amaze people what is that lovers talk so much. The endless talks in person, the hours of non stop romance over phone, the hushed whispers, the ding ding messengers, the alerts of SMS flirt messages - of course it must be puzzling a bunch of people (who haven't met the right one yet) on what could be there so much to talk ? For Godssake, even China and United States do not have so much to talk on bilateral agreements.
What would be even more puzzling is the fact that 2 people who have been "identified" as the right "the one" for each other with the help of matrimonial bureaus and blessings of the elders also have so much to talk pretty much right away ! They were strangers to each other less than 24 hours ago and all of a sudden they have so much to talk and so much to share !! The movie Azhagan had the wonderful picturisation of lovers-talk scenario with a typical KB touch in the song Sangeetha swarangal..

So what do the lovers talk ? Even if one were to give a minute by minute autobiographical sketch to one another, it can take only so much time. And it cant be that interesting to talk about for hours & days anyway. Movies, perhaps ? But that becomes a repetition soon enough. Tastes, likes, dislikes ? Well, that would actually end in a single post in a blog. About friends, rumors, gossips ? One needs to spend time to collect these information - if he/she is always on phone & Yahoo all the time, where can he/she get the time to collect these information ? Unless one keeps talking the same stuff over and over again to the other, like the never ending TBS repeats of the sitcoms, Iam running out of potential topics that can be talked about!

The surprising thing is that while we in this post already got tired trying to figure out what are the topics that the lovers talk about so much, the courting couple never seem to get tired after hours and hours of chats for days and weeks. They always show the same enthusiasm to meet, to speak; their faces glow the same way when the cell beeps like it did the first time. And they spend the same time and even more during every call.

And yet, after all those hours, if one were to ask the lover boy or girl what he/she talked, seldom is it remembered. The best answer that you can get is a smile (with a blush). And a complaint that there isn't enough time to talk and/or there are always intrusions (realize that they are referring to you!). Of course, this long hours of love-talk is called sweet nothings for every correct reason.

And so my friends who have found your right one, continue your non stop yapping. And my other friends, who are puzzled by this unending blah blah & blah, just wait until you meet the right one to start your quota of payment to the mobile companies.

Who knows, maybe if people & governments talked to each other more like this, there will be more love in the air and the world may not necessarily face some of the problems that are existent now !

Happy New Year, Happy Holidays and happy romancing.

alonso joins mercedes

Hey..

Thanks to all for a very lively discussion on the previous post. Iam sorry for my lack of responses up there, but will definitely follow your comments with a continuation post shortly.

Meanwhile Iam here just to update the recent events in the best of motorsport - Formula One. World Champion Fernando Alonso is moving to Vodafone McLaren Mercedez racing from the 2007 season. This means the ouster of either Juan Pablo Montoya or Kimi Raikkonen from the Mercedes team at the end of 2006. The answer as of now is apparent that Raikkonen would most likely move over to Ferrari-Marlboro team, replacing the all time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Alonso's move will definitely put Renault to a backseat, this only adding to their woe of tyre king Michelin deciding to withdraw out of Formula One at the end of 2006 season. With the Concorde agreement coming to a close we are in for very interesting times ! This is the current prediction of the 2007 lineup of the top teams.

Renault - Giancarlo Fisichella & Heiki Kovalainen
Ferrari-Marlboro - Kimi Raikkonen & Felippe Massa
Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes - Fernando Alonso & Juan Pablo Montoya

This year Iam still confused between cheering for McLaren & Renault. In any case I will continue to cheer for Michelin.
